Google has announced that it will discontinue the VPN by Google One service, a part of its broader Google One cloud storage offering, citing underutilization by subscribers. This change, which is set to take effect later in 2024, aligns with Google's efforts to streamline its services and concentrate on features that engage more users.

In a series of updates revealed to users via an email, which Android Authority had access to, Google outlined several adjustments slated for May 15. These include not only the termination of the VPN service but also the end of free shipping for print orders from Google Photos.

While the discontinuation of the VPN feature will impact many Google One users, those with Pixel devices, specifically models Pixel 7 or newer, will continue to enjoy VPN services through their device settings. Similarly, Google Fi subscribers will retain access to VPN functionalities.

Google's decision to phase out the VPN service follows its discovery that the feature was not widely used. According to a statement provided to 9to5Google, this move will enable the company to devote more resources to developing other in-demand features within the Google One suite.

For Google One users who might need to find alternative VPN services, providers like Surfshark and ExpressVPN are currently offering promotional rates starting at $2.29 per month.
